The Class of 2017 techniques In! Bike racks are all occupied. Lines are a bit that is little again to get food. Books are being purchased. Tools are put away and summer time construction has dwindled down (well, nearly all of it). Cars filled with boxes of clothes and school materials are being directed around campus to halls that are residential. Going carts, student ID cards, and last second trips to Target; folks, it is officially Move-In Day.
I was overwhelmed by the energy of the campus as I was walking the campus to take some pictures. Sometimes I forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future global leaders. I found myself simply using all of it in while smiling at pupils and parents I have never met before. ( It may are only a little weird, but hey, I happened to be caught in a minute). Suddenly, I wished to travel back in its history, https://shmoop.pro/ get back again to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as they were entering their dorms for the first time. Subsequently, we sensed a great amount of pride and a little bit of hesitation from parents because they struggled to allow their kids go. It is apparent that this moment is really a milestone in every of their lives. Students look forward to their next four years at USC and wonder at all the possibilities it could bring, while parents feel a feeling of success simply because they were somewhat responsible for getting their kids to college. With all of these thoughts swirling on campus, I can see why there were therefore hugs that are many around.
During the convocation that is welcome, speakers stood in front side for the incoming class of 2017 and gave advice on how to make the most of their hours here at USC. I want to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife College, said during her message: Be present. It isn’t as easy as it sounds but you will be a better human being the sooner it is possible to exercise it in your own life. Towards the brand new incoming freshmen at USC and present kids; I challenge you to be present. Be there in your classes. Be there in your conversations. Be present while you do your homework. Be present whenever you’re meeting new people. Be present when you write your personal statements. Be present when you study for your AP/IB tests. Be present when you take the tests. Be present when you ask her/him away. Be contained in conflict. Be present in new challenges. Be present in all of your experiences that are new adventures. Take it all in. Be present!

Hey Parents! Listen Up!

Parents play a crucial role in the college process that is entire. Usually times, moms and dads help subsidize some, if not all, of going to an university or college, and so are always here to inquire of those specific ‘parent’ questions you need to ask the tour guide when the last meningitis outbreak was? that you as students can’t be bothered with (really mom, did)

Nevertheless, there are circumstances where moms and dads must have a seat that is back allow their sons and daughters to ask the difficult concerns. Here, we now have a compiled an inventory of ‘dos and donts’ about parenting during the college search and application process:

Do help your son or child know very well what they are searching for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial help, etc. getting a good fit for your certain wants and needs is more important than the cachet of the name.

Don’t gather most of the information for them! Enable them to make contact with admission counselors and discover the information that is relevant themselves. After all, they are going to be in college someplace soon enough, and it is important they learn to navigate the process themselves.

Do encourage your sons and daughters to see university campuses, and have them on those trips! The easiest way to become familiar with an university or college is result in the stop by at campus.

Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus tours, interviews, receptions, etc. Allow them do so! This shows us that they are independent and mature.

Do remind your sons and daughters that not getting in to their very first option school may seem like the end associated with world at that moment, but that things work out and as they work hard that they will be successful wherever they go as long. And, encourage them to transfer if that organization remains towards the top of their list even after enrolling someplace else.

Don’t fill away their applications for them! We can inform also it reflects poorly on the applicant. We realize that these are adults applying and expect their applications to share their true voice and style.

So the moral is: find a stability. Realize that your child is mostly about to attempt a life-changing journey and that starting to take ownership of the college application procedure is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured that we are here to answer those tough ‘parent’ concerns, even when they involve where you should send the care package.
